Subacromial bursitis is a common cause of shoulder pain and limited range of motion. Classically, the patient’s symptoms are greatest with elevation of the arm. The pain results from inflammation and distension of the subacromial bursa and is exacerbated with arm elevation as the bursa slides beneath the acromion process of the scapula. Subacromial bursitis may arise independently but is commonly seen in conjunction with impingement syndromes and rotator cuff pathology, including rotator cuff tears and tendinosis. The incidence is increased in patients with osseous narrowing of the subacromial interval. It is also associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
